I can do it…

Oh hey guys. Happy Tuesday! What’s going on? We’re getting another blizzard but that’s all I’m going to say (to avoid thinking about that terrible white stuff any further). Well, maybe I’ll say that I can’t wait for spring. Moving right along…

So, I was planning to write a post tonight about how half marathon training was going. While I still plan to do so, the tone has changed somewhat from what I was envisioning. You see, last week was tough. It was week three of my training and I was struggling physically and mentally. My energy was low and my drive was low.  Being that my whole goal for this half marathon is to build myself up and not break myself down, I started re-evaluating my plans.

I was going to tell you that my plan was to keep up with my training as much as my body and mind allows. That, if March 21st comes around and I’m not feeling ready, then I may not race New Bedford Half. Last week my “run” on Thursday ended up being a nice 40 low-impact minutes on the elliptical and while my mileage was low, I felt like it was the best thing to do. I ran a bit on Friday (an off day) and ran the amount of miles my training plan called for during the weekend. I was still low on miles.

Well, this week, I’m feeling so much differently. Last night was soccer and I felt great running around. Tonight, I had a 5 mile run with some speed work built in the middle to tackle (ended up being 6 miles total). Guys, I rocked this run. I enjoyed it and felt great. It was SUCH a difference from how I was feeling just a few days ago.

I think I’ve learned a few things. 1) Off days happen. 2) Listening to what your body wants is the best thing you can do. 3) Keeping your eye on the prize is also a good thing. 4) I really want to make this half marathon happen and… 5) I can most definitely do this.

I’m not going to be wimpy about it but I’m also not going to be crazy. I’m feeling refreshed and renewed and I couldn’t be more pumped.

I most definitely refueled with a delicious dinner – veg refried beans, brown rice, sauteed pepper and onion, avocado and lots of salsa. So good!

Now, I’m going to do some major relaxing in my favorite pair of pj pants – monkeys on sleds! :)

Have a great night, friends!!

Sometimes skipping a run is really the best thing you can do for yourself. I've found that as long as you don't start skipping runs regularly, you'll be fine. I've also scaled down my training plan (i.e gone back to a novice plan) when I've started to feel burned out.

Your dinner is like my favorite dinner ever. I eat some refried bean incarnation at least once a week!

I'm sorry you had a rough week. I think listening to your body and going off plan is the right thing to do. You have to do what's right for you because then you'll end up dreading every workout and the race itself. Keep listening to your body!

You have to do what's best for you, and we all definitely have bad days. I'm glad you had a great run after the bad one! :)

I'm training for the Run to Remember half-marathon in May. I'm fairly new to running (only been seriously running since about August), but was definitely bitten by the bug. I have an extra long training plan and I definitely am finding it hard to stay motivated. This silly weather isn't helping either!
